Copycat CHECKMATE in 11! Vienna Game Max Lange Defense – Quick Wins! #12

chess noob Quick Wins! is a new series of short videos, to demonstrate very quick wins! As a beginner, you become aware of the Scholar’s Mate and the Fool’s Mate, but neither of these show up in real games. However, there are tricky quick checkmates and wins that occur, even at the intermediate level of chess.

This was game against one of my subscribers (@Man543a) – an Indian gentleman on chess.com who is earlier in his chess journey than myself.

This game started with the full symmetrical or “copycat” version of the Max Lange Defense in the Vienna Game (1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5) and I brought out my queen (4. Qg4) to immediately target the pawn on g7. This is where the symmetry must break as Black cannot bring out their queen to g5, at least, not without losing their queen.

Black must defend the g7 pawn due to an impending mate threat and here, my opponent blunders [+6.36] by attempting to attack my queen with their knight (4… Nh6). The g7 pawn is lost the next turn. In the next few moves, the combination of my knight, bishop, and queen smashes the king’s defences, drags the king out of their castle into the centre of the board, with an execution on move 11! Brutal!
