chess noob Quick Wins! is a new series of short videos, to demonstrate very quick wins! As a beginner, you become aware of the Scholar’s Mate and the Fool’s Mate, but neither of these show up in real games. However, there are tricky quick checkmates and wins that occur, even at the intermediate level of chess.

This was a beautiful 9-move game where my opponent with the White pieces played the Ruy Lopez, I responded with the Jaenisch Gambit, and they accepted (1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 f5 4. exf5).

The evaluation at this point is completely even [0.00], but it isn’t necessarily easy for White to navigate, especially if they are unfamiliar. Like a reverse Vienna Gambit Accepted, I push my e-pawn to e4, attacking the White knight on f3. And just like in the Vienna Gambit Accepted, the knight initially doesn’t look like it has anywhere good to go.

However, this is where there are some differences. In the Vienna Gambit Accepted, the knight needs to undevelop. This is a mistake in Jaenisch – from [0.00] to [-2.85]!

On move 7, I strike with one of the tactical themes in these sorts of positions with Nd4, forking the queen, bishop, and pawn. White moves their queen to an unfortunate position (9. Qe3) and the game ends with (9… Nxc2+) with a family fork of the king, queen and rook!
