chess noob Quick Wins! is a series of short videos, to demonstrate very quick wins! As a beginner, you become aware of the Scholar’s Mate and the Fool’s Mate, but neither of these show up in real games. However, there are tricky quick checkmates and wins that occur, even at the intermediate level of chess.

This was a brutal five-move win. I had the White pieces and played the mighty Giraffe Attack against the Anderssen Defense line of the Vienna Game (1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Bc5 3. Qg4).

The most common move by Black against the rampaging Giraffe Queen is (3… Qf6), a logical move that defends the g7 pawn, and sets up a potential Scholar’s Mate idea with Black’s bishop and queen lined up against the pawn on f2. However, this is neatly blocked with a normal developing move (4. Nf3).

Here, Black made a blunder, but one that is psychologically not uncommon. They played (4… d6), opening the light squared diagonal, attacking the White Giraffe Queen with their light square bishop. This is natural move. However, as Black’s queen has developed prior to the queen’s knight, the bishop isn’t defended by anything! The normal heuristic that the bishop is defended in the opening (by either the queen or the rook) is not the case!

On move 5, my Giraffe Queen races to Black’s back rank and tramples the bishop to death with check! Stockfish’s evaluation is around [+9]. Black blocks the check with their queen, but immediately resigns afterwards having suffered critical emotional damage! GG!
