Vienna Gambit Accepted | Comforting and Satisfying!

The Vienna Gambit is the Mozart of chess gambits (https://adventuresofachessnoob.com/2023/01/28/vienna-gambit-the-mozart-of-gambits/), and is the best when it’s accepted!

I had this relatively quick game after a string of losses, and basically, winning a Vienna Gambit Accepted game (1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. f4 exf4) is like having a warm mug of hot chocolate – comforting and satisfying!

We went down the usual line and Black attempted to pin my pawn on e5 with Qe7. This is a natural move at the beginner-intermediate level as Black attempts to avoid having to un-develop their knight. However, it’s arguably a mistake as White now has a forcing advantage as the pin is un-pinned with the symmetrical Qe2. Curiously, on move 5, Black now blunders by developing their other knight (5… Nc6) ignoring that their king’s knight is, in fact, still being attacked by the pawn! There’s no trick here – that knight is hanging, and Stockfish gives the position at [+7] rating. Not bad!

I think that Black was perhaps under the impression that I wouldn’t want to trade queens, but that’s a mistake. A piece up, I absolutely do want to trade queens, and gain a tempo of development when recapturing their queen. On move 8, Black recaptures my pawn, tripling their pawns on the f-file…

From this point, it’s really a matter of completion. Black’s kingside defence is shattered and awkward, while White has a major advantage in development and material. On move 22, I force capture Black’s rook with an absolute fork and Black resigns having accepted their lost position.
