chess noob Quick Wins! is a series of short videos, to demonstrate very quick wins! As a beginner, you become aware of the Scholar’s Mate and the Fool’s Mate, but neither of these show up in real games. However, there are tricky quick checkmates and wins that occur, even at the intermediate level of chess.
This week’s Quick Win is from @shlomo55555 again, who played a rather unsound game of the Vienna Gambit Accepted, made a mistake, but won anyway!
The Vienna Gambit Accepted is a super-fun line for White (1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. f4 exf4) as White is straight up better with great tactical possibilities after move 3! Stockfish 15.1 NNUE at depth 30+ gives the position an evaluation of [+1], which is extraordinary when you consider that Black is up a point of material. Effectively, it means that White’s position is effectively better by an equivalent of [+2]!
However, Black correctly retreats their knight and White plays a somewhat inaccurate move with d4 [-0.8]. There are some tricky lines of theory here where you bait and then attempt to trap Black’s queen, but I don’t think this was what my subscriber for planning. The loss of the f-pawn means that Black has the tactical resource of Qh4+. To avoid this, normally the Nf3 on move 5 is best.
Black finds Qh4+ and my subscriber is forced to move their king. Black can now completely punish White here by infiltrating the queen with Qf2+, which then basically forces a queen trade. Meaning, White doesn’t have sufficient compensation from the gambit – down one point of material, lost the right to castle, and entering a queen-less middle game. The control of the centre and quicker development isn’t worth that.
However, those sharp tactics with early queen moves are not easy to see at the beginner level and Black finds themselves having their queen chased. On move 10, White plays a devious trap (10. g3) – it appears objectively bad as it’s defender, the pawn on h2, is pinned to the rook. This move is indeed a mistake [+0.2] but not for that reason! Black spends four seconds deciding that it’s a safe capture, but it is in fact a game ending blunder [+10]!
Because we now have the beautiful (11. Bxg5+) – a devastating royal fork and Black resigns. GG!
