Vienna Gambit Accepted EPIC WINNING | Quick Wins #32

chess noob Quick Wins! is a series of short videos, to demonstrate very quick wins! As a beginner, you become aware of the Scholar’s Mate and the Fool’s Mate, but neither of these show up in real games. However, there are tricky quick checkmates and wins that occur, even at the intermediate level of chess.

Today’s quick win is back to basics – Vienna Gambit Accepted (1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. f4 exf4) – and it still has its venom at the 1400s! My opponent with the Black pieces wasn’t familiar with the gambit as after the e-pawn push (4. e5), they spent two minutes thinking their next move.

In this position, there is only one good move for Black, undeveloping their knight back to f8. However, it is very common that Black will play (4… Qe7), attempting to pin the pawn to my king. This, however, is an escalating mistake [+2.9]. Consider that Black is up a point of material. This means that position-wise, White is better than Black by around [+4] – completely winning!

The response to know is to unpin the pawn with a symmetrical queen move (5. Qe2) and the knight is once again being attacked. Black is forced to undevelop the knight at this point, and I played it safe with (6. Nf3) preventing a potential Qh4+. For Vienna Gambit Accepted enthusiasts, Qh4+ in this situation is fine (though tricky to play) and the engine actually considers d4 to be the best move!

Black develops their other knight (6… Nc6) and I now take the full centre (7. d4). Black tries to add another attacker on e5 with (7… f6) but it’s another mistake [+7.6]. At this point, White has the powerful thematic move in the Vienna (8. Nd5)! This attacks the Black queen and the c7 pawn, which comes with an absolute fork of the king and rook.

Black undercalculated and immediately moved their queen out of danger with (8… Qe6) – a blunder [+12], as (9. Nxc7+) is a family fork! Emotional damage, and Black resigns psychologically defeated. GG!
