chess noob Quick Wins! is a series of short videos, to demonstrate very quick wins! As a beginner, you become aware of the Scholar’s Mate and the Fool’s Mate, but neither of these show up in real games. However, there are tricky quick checkmates and wins that occur, even at the intermediate level of chess.
Today’s game is meme territory! My follow Chess Boot Camp member @Castiron2021 posted this game where they played the Vienna Game (I approve!) and their opponent with the Black pieces responded with the Bongcloud (1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Ke7)! Although I thought of this as very weird, when I looked up the Lichess community database, this has apparently been played over 16,000 times before! 🤯
Well, according to Stockfish 15.1 NNUE at high depth, the Bongcloud variation of the Vienna has an evaluation of [+2.2]! Now you know!
I’m not entirely sure what Black was doing, but they were blitzing out moves – literally some moves were made in a second. Perhaps expectedly for someone rated in the 600s ELO, some of these moves were terrible mistakes. Move 11, @Castiron2021 delivered a rather beautiful checkmate with the Black king weirdly on the g6 square. GG!
