chess noob Quick Wins! is a series of short videos, to demonstrate very quick wins! As a beginner, you become aware of the Scholar’s Mate and the Fool’s Mate, but neither of these show up in real games. However, there are tricky quick checkmates and wins that occur, even at the intermediate level of chess.
Today’s game is by my mate, @benhunt72 who runs the (much larger!) chess YouTube channel and club, “Chess Boot Camp“! I’m a member of his club on chess.com and he gave a a shout out a few weeks ago.
Anyway, @benhunt72 sent me this rather satisfying game that demonstrates the evil delight that can be had with a double pawn sacrifice! He played the Scotch Game, Göring Gambit, Double Pawn Sacrifice Variation (1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 exd4 4. c3 dxc3 5. Bc4), and his opponent with the black pieces accepted!
The idea in trading away two pawns is to have a massive lead in development, and to have tactically advantageous open lines for the bishop pair and queen. The implications of this can be unexpected for the unprepared opponent, especially in blitz!
We see this in glorious fashion in this game! Black misses that the long dark square diagonal is completely open and under attack by my mate’s bishop on b2. First, the b7 pawn falls, then the rook that is trapped on h8. Black scrambles to develop, makes another mistake, allowing the dark square bishop to capture yet another pawn on f6. And then on move 13, Black once again misses the danger of the long diagonal, hanging their knight on d4 and immediately resigns. GG!
