Vienna Game Main Line | BEAUTIFUL Double Slice CHECKMATE! Quick Wins #49

chess noob Quick Wins! is a series of short videos, to demonstrate very quick wins! As a beginner, you become aware of the Scholar’s Mate and the Fool’s Mate, but neither of these show up in real games. However, there are tricky quick checkmates and wins that occur, even at the intermediate level of chess.

Today’s game was sent in to me by @benhunt72 of Chess Boot Camp (https://www.youtube.com/@ChessBootCamp); a very very lovely checkmate in 11 in the Vienna Game Main Line, where he had the Black pieces.

Now, Vienna Game Main Line matches aren’t exactly known for early mates, making this game rather interesting!

The game is normal up to move 4 down the Main Line (1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. f4 d5 4. fxe5 Nxe4). White has several possible choices here: the Classic (Nf3), the Modern (d3), and the Paulsen Attack (Qf3). White, however, who I suspect isn’t familiar with the Vienna, decided to “exchange” with (5. Nxe4). Although this isn’t fatal, it is a suboptimal move that gives a good advantage to Black [-0.7] in the opening.

One of the ideas in the Main Line with White is that you need to stabilise the centre. However, White played the aggressive developing move (6. Bc4), a mistake [-2.2]. In the next few moves, White falls apart, losing their advanced pawn on e5, and allowing the Black queen to take the centre.

With the open centre and open lines, Black now gives a devastating attack with (9… exd3+) with discovered check by the queen. The king moves to the wrong square (Kd2) with the evaluation going from [-5.4] to [-M2]. And the mate is very beautiful. Like two slicing sword strokes, we have Bb4+ down the dark square diagonal, and then the fatal blow, Bf5# along the light squares. GG!
